Alaskans were shut out of the medals Monday on the opening day of the U.S. Junior National cross-country ski championships at Utah's Soldier Hollow.

Silas Talbot placed fourth in the Older Junior boys sprint race and Matthew Muffoletto was sixth in the Junior 2 boys race to lead the Alaskans.

Talbot, who competes at Dartmouth College and therefore is skiing on the New England region team, is a Service High graduate. Muffoletto, who trains with Alaska Winter Stars, is a freshman at Service. They were the only Alaskans to advance to the finals of the 1.3-kilometer classic sprint.

Alaska landed eight skiers in the B finals, which determine seventh through 12th places.

Thomas O'Harra of the Alaska Pacific nordic program led a group of three Alaskans who made it to the Junior 2 boys B final. He placed second in the heat to finish eighth overall; Jake Bassett and John Farr, both Alaska Winter Stars skiers, placed ninth and 10th, respectively.

A pair of AWS skiers, Marion Woods and Stephanie Kirk, placed 10th and 12th in Junior I girls, Sarrissa Lammers of Alaska Nordic Racing was 12th among Junior 2 girls, Eric Backstrom of AWS finished 12th in Junior 2 boys and Eliza Rorabaugh of FXC (Fairbanks) placed 12th among Older Junior girls.
