When the UAA men's basketball team opens play in the NCAA West Region tournament Friday, they'll do so with the region's Player of the Year in the lineup.
Taylor Rohde, the team's 6-foot-9 senior center, was named the top men's player in the region Wednesday when the Daktronic NCAA Division II West Region teams were announced.
Rohde led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in scoring (19.9), rebounding (8.1) and field goal percentage (62.8) this season and helped the Seawolves to a 22-6 record and the No. 16 ranking in the country. UAA will be the No. 2 seed when the eight-team West Region tournament tips off Friday in Bellingham, Wash.
The UAA women, who are the No. 2 seed play in the women's tournament in San Diego, Calif., landed two players on the all-region team.
Hanna Johansson, a 6-2 senior center, was a first-team pick and Haley Holmstead, a 5-7 junior guard, was a second-team selection.
Johansson averages 13.8 points and 9.0 rebounds and shoots 55 percent from the field for the eighth-ranked Seawolves, who take a 27-4 record into the tournament. Holmstead is the team's leading scorer with 15.5 points per game.
Ten players from West Region teams -- five on the first team, five on the second team -- earned recognition on each of the teams. First-team selections will be considered for All-America honors.
The West Region consists of three conferences, including the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Rohde and Johansson earlier this month were named the GNAC players of the year and Holmstead was named the conference's newcomer of the year among women.
