VISUAL ART

From ditch to gallery

Marybeth Michaels makes art from discarded items she sometimes finds along the side of the road. A show of her work, "Roadside Gems," is on view this month at Alaska Pacific University, where you'll also find an adjacent exhibit by Fairbanks abstract artist Robby Mohatt.

FILM

Marshall's law

The HBO film "Thurgood," starring Laurence Fishburne, will be screened at 3 p.m. Sunday at Wilda Marston Theatre at Loussac Library. The bio-flick, based on a one-man Broadway show, recounts the life of the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, a crusading civil rights attorney before he was elevated to the nation's highest court. The New York Times review of the movie promised that it contained "not a single dull moment." The presentation is a gift to the community from Urban Works.

THEATER

Drumming for relief

The Japan Relief Fund of Alaska will host a "Day of Remembrance" for the victims of last year's earthquake/tsunami/nuclear crisis at 5 p.m. Saturday in the Asian Alaskan Cultural Center, next to Northwood Elementary School at 4807 Northwood Drive. The commemoration will feature a lantern ceremony, food, traditional music and drumming by area daiko drum groups. Admission is free and all proceeds will go to the Red Cross of Japan. More information is available at jprf.org.
