For the sixth year in a row, a Juneau team has won the Alaska Region National Ocean Sciences Bowl competition for science-minded high schoolers. Pelagic Magic, from Juneau-Douglas High School, took top place in the tournament, also known as the Tsunami Bowl, held in Seward on March 2 and 3.

The Nefarious Dawgsharks of Cordova placed second, and Twilight Zone, from Homer, came in third in a field of 21 teams involving about 120 students.

The academic competition, organized by the University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, consisted of a research paper, oral presentation and quiz, with points awarded in each activity.

A new addition to the 15-year-old event this year involved a challenge to design, build, test and complete underwater tasks with a remotely operated submarine vehicle -- all in less than two hours. The Mat-Su Career and Technical High School Tiger Sharks won that stand-alone event.

Awards included five scholarships from Icicle Seafoods totaling $25,000.

In addition to the cities represented by the top three, teams came from Dillinham, Fairbanks, Kenny Lake, Ketchikan, Kotlik, Kotzebue, Petersburg, Scammon Bay, Seward, Unalaska and Wasilla.
