Alaska receives federal grants for school routes

Published: March 13, 2012

Alaska transportation officials say seven projects are the recipients of federal grants for developing safe school routes.

The $291,000 being distributed to projects in Fairbanks, Palmer, Soldotna and other areas come from the federal Safe Routes to School program.

Officials say the money goes toward projects including infrastructure and planning.

According to officials, the program aims to increase the number of students walking and biking to school safely.

For the next round of grants, applications may be submitted through May 30.
