Reynolds' lead slim

Salcha's Arleigh Reynolds, aiming to become the first musher from the Interior to win the Open North America sled-dog race in 20 years, owns a 12-second lead on 11-time race champion Egil Ellis heading into Sunday's finale of the three-day event in Fairbanks.

Reynolds clocked 65 minutes, 11.5 seconds on a 20-mile course Saturday for a two-day time of 129:17.3. Ellis, 31 seconds slower than Reynolds on Saturday, checked in with an overall time of 1:29:29.

Sitting third, 65 seconds behind Reynolds, is 2012 Fur Rendezvous champion Ken Chezik.

Sunday's final heat is 27.5 miles.
