Alaska senators want to know more about F-16 transfer

Published: March 23, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- Alaska's two U.S. senators want more information about a plan to transfer Eielson Air Force Base's fleet of F-16 fighter jets to Anchorage next year.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says Sens. Lisa Murkowski and Mark Begich are accusing the military of trying to get around a federal law requiring more disclosure to Congress.

At a hearing Tuesday of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Begich asked Air Force Gen. Norton Schwartz and Air Force Secretary Michael Donley about the number of civilian workers that will be affected.

Schwartz said Eielson would be reduced by about 660 personnel, but that he didn't know the split between military and civilian.
