School districts warn of layoffs without budget increase

Associated PressMarch 27, 2012

JUNEAU -- School district officials are taking advantage of a trip to Juneau to outline their financial struggles to lawmakers as part of a plea for increased funding.

A group from Northwest Arctic Borough schools on Tuesday told the House Finance Committee that their teachers have agreed to get forgo salary increases next year because of budget difficulties. Leaders from Kodiak schools said they plan layoffs unless the state gives an increase. Wrangell's superintendent voiced similar concerns.

The concerns come as the committee proposes an education budget for next year, even as schools seek additional funding and guarantees of multiyear increases.

Educators remain in Juneau the rest of the week for a summit on school finances and other topics.
