Gatto flies to Seattle for medical treatment after night in hospital

Associated PressApril 6, 2012

JUNEAU -- Rep. Carl Gatto has been taken out of state to receive medical treatment.

Karen Sawyer, the Palmer Republican's chief of staff, says her boss was hospitalized Thursday in Juneau after a planned doctor's appointment. She says he was treated overnight for dehydration and a kidney condition then flown early Friday to a Seattle-area hospital.

Gatto, who has battled prostate cancer, was away from the Legislature earlier this session to receive radiation treatments.

Sawyer says it appears unlikely that Gatto will return to Alaska before the end of session.

His constituent services office will remain open through the end of the year, and Sawyer says she remains hopeful he will make it back to work by then.

She says Gatto has planned for this to be his last session.
