Police arrest man suspected in 3 fires

Published: April 16, 2012

Anchorage police say they have arrested an 18-year-old man suspected of setting several fires early Monday morning in the Midtown area.

Police spokesman Lt. Dave Parker says in a release that Sosiua Vahaakolo faces two counts of negligent burning and one count of arson. He's scheduled to be arraigned later Monday.

Parker says one car was found on fire, and two trash bins, including one fairly close to Barnes & Noble, were also ignited. The Anchorage Fire Department extinguished all three fires.

Police arrested Vahaakolo after an officer found him trying to hide from another police cruiser.

Parker says Vahaakolo smelled of smoke, had a fresh burn on his hand and was in possession of two lighters when arrested.
