Seward Highway to close for avalanche-control work

Anchorage Daily News / adn.comApril 18, 2012

Road crews are closing the Seward Highway on Wednesday for avalanche work as Southcentral's record-breaking snowfall begins to shed from the mountains.

Crews will be blasting the snow with a cannon and clearing it from the highway, if needed, the state transportation department says. They're warning motorists to expect delays of 20 to 45 minutes on the highway at three locations.

Closures are expected at:

• The Bird Point area, between Mile 95 and 100, from 2 to 3 p.m.

• The Summit Lake Area, near Mile 44, also from 2 to 3 p.m.

• The Kenai Lake Area, near Mile 21, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The DOT says updates on road conditions can be found by dialing 511 or visiting 511.alaska.gov online.
