Ferry service starts Friday in Kodiak Island village

Published: April 23, 2012

Ouzinkie joins the Alaska Marine Highway system this week.

KMXT reports the ferry Tustumena will begin making regular calls on the Spruce Island community of 200 on Friday.

The city recently completed a new dock capable of supporting the Tustumena.

Ouzinkie is about 15 miles from the city of Kodiak and will stop as the ferry travels from Kodiak to Port Lions.

Neither Ouzinkie nor Port Lions have docks large enough to handle the larger state ferry Kennicott, which serves Kodiak during the summer.
