Salcha floods as breakup ice jams Tanana River in Interior

Published: April 24, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- An ice jam has sent floodwaters spilling over the Old Richardson Highway in Salcha.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says a quarter-mile-long ice jam in the Tanana River is causing flooding of a foot or more in the community 40 miles southeast of Fairbanks.

Ed Plumb, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service, said Monday that the flooding is pretty typical for Salcha, as he surveyed the ice jam that has backed up the river.

It appears the flooding is a little worse this year than in the past few years.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
