Fairbanks 911 abusers face new fine

Published: April 24, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- The Fairbanks City Council has voted to approve an ordinance to fine 911 abusers.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports that the ordinance passed unanimously Monday authorizes the city to fine chronic abusers $250.

Mayor Jerry Cleworth says the ordinance is intended to deter the "frequent flier" abusers of 911.

Cleworth says 911 abuse has been a chronic problem with a few individuals. He says those individuals will use the system for nonemergency needs, such as finding telephone numbers.
