Juneau food store to close in September

JUNEAU -- The Alaskan and Proud Market in Juneau will close come September.

The Ketchikan Daily News says the Ketchikan-based Williams Inc. has operated the A&P store in the Foodland Shopping Center in downtown Juneau since 1995. The company issued a statement Thursday saying the decision was necessary because of failed negotiations with the property's landlord.

CEO Ben Williams says he's been meeting individually with the approximately 90 people employed at the Juneau store, which will remain open through Sept. 8.

Employees who are being laid off will be provided outplacement assistance and severance benefits.

The store opened in 1963.
