Published: May 2, 2012

An opera star from Fairbanks and a hockey player from Anchorage who was one of the first Alaskans to play professionally are among this year's selections to the Alaska High School Hall of Fame.

Vivica Genaux, one of the world's premier mezzo sopranos and a 1987 West Valley graduate, and Steve MacSwain, who starred at East High before playing professionally in Europe, are among nine individuals who will be inducted at a ceremony in August.

Other selections include four coaches, including a pair from Chugiak -- Paul Brauneis (hockey) and Ed Blahous (soccer). Kenai basketball girls coach Craig Jung and Ketchikan swimming and diving coach Mike Smithers were also selected.

The Class of 2012 also includes Kenai Peninsula school administrator John Andrews, Anchorage referee John Paxson, Haines musician Richard Cooper and Sitka musician Roger Schmidt.

Additionally, the Alaska Commercial Co. will be inducted as a sponsor and major contributor and the Nordic Ski Association of Anchorage will be inducted as a major contributor.

The hall of fame is run by the Alaska School Activities Association.
