North Pole bids for international sled dog event

Published: May 4, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- North Pole has put in a bid to host the 2013 International Federation of Sleddog Sports World Championships.

A decision is expected when event officials meet in Oslo, Norway, in early June. The championships, held every other year, alternate between sites in Europe and North America.

The North Pole Economic Development Corp. is the bidder.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports trails in North Pole, Fairbanks, Two Rivers and Salcha would be used if they are awarded the bid.

Events would be spread out over four to five weeks, starting with junior four-dog races in North Pole Feb. 22-24. The last event is the open unlimited race, which will be held in conjunction with the GCI Open North American Championships March 15-17.
