JUNEAU -- A U.S. Postal Service spokesman says a moratorium on closing postal facilities is still scheduled to end May 15, despite calls from senators to extend it.

Alaska U.S. Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski are among those who've written the postmaster general seeking an extension until a bill intended to reform the Postal Service is enacted.

When the moratorium was imposed in December, agency spokesman Ernie Swanson said, it was intended to give Congress time to act on "relief" for the cash-strapped agency.

While the Senate recently passed legislation, Swanson says it doesn't go far enough to avoid further closures.

Five Alaska post offices remain on the list for possible closure. Swanson says no decision has been made on closing the facilities.
