East picked up a pair of 3-2 wins in Friday's East-West Invitational softball tournament at Albrecht Fields, knocking off Cook Inlet Conference rival West in extra innings and defeating West Valley in a late game.
East freshman Hannah Peterson scored the winning run against West, coming home from second base on a wild play in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Tie-breaker rules put Peterson on second to start the inning, and she bolted for third when Terra Sang-Patrone's bat connected with a pitch. When West pitcher Pauline Tufi caught Sang-Patrone's pop up, Peterson had to turn and hustle back to second, where it appeared she was going to be thrown out. Tufi's throw to second sailed into the outfield, however, allowing Peterson to tag up and score the winning run.
The game was a pitchers duel prior to the frantic finish, with the teams tied 1-1 through seven innings of regulation. East's Sydney Smith struck out nine in the win, and Tufi struck out eight, both pitching complete games. East's Taria Page went 2 for 4 and drove in a run. West's Jamie Bingham also went 2 or 4 and scored a run.
Smith also pitched a complete game in the win over West Valley, and she drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Erika Meyerson doubled to lead off the inning, was bunted to third by Carrie Sauerbrey and scored on a grounder from Smith to seal the win.
The four-team, round-robin tournament continues Saturday morning when West takes on West Valley at 9, and East plays North Pole at 10:30.
