Ferry that struck Petersburg dock faces new delay

Associated PressMay 9, 2012

JUNEAU -- The state Transportation Department says there are more problems for the ferry Matanuska.

The ferry is delayed Wednesday in Wrangell because of mechanical issues with the hydraulic system on the bridge transfer system on the Wrangell dock, temporarily preventing loading and unloading of passengers.

That comes just two days after the Matanuska slammed bow-first into the Ocean Beauty seafood processing plant's cement dock in Petersburg.

DOT spokesman Jeremy Woodrow says it's a coincidence and the ferry is running fine after the accident.

The Coast Guard allowed the Matanuska to sail hours after the accident, which remains under investigation.

Officials expect the ferry to arrive in Petersburg about 2 p.m. Wednesday, about 10 hours behind schedule. The ferry had to wait for a higher tide to navigate Wrangell Narrows.
