Published: May 10, 2012

JUNEAU -- A Juneau marina has been fined $5,390 by the Environmental Protection Agency for a violation connected to an underground storage tank.

The federal agency says Fishermen's Bend in Auke Bay failed to conduct tests or maintain documentation to detect or prevent releases to the environment. The business is owned by Papadrew Inc. of Juneau.

Co-owner Troy Andrew says he was surprised by the fine. He says he believes the marina followed the rules.

The Juneau Empire reports penalties in EPA Region 10 from January through March totaled $821,731. Eielson Air Force Base outside Fairbanks in March paid $45,700 for failure to comply with waste management requirements.
