Fairbanks woman seeks change of plea in hit-and-run

Published: May 10, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- A 30-year-old driver charged with leaving the scene of an accident -- in which her car struck a 92-year-old Fairbanks pedestrian -- is asking for a change of plea hearing.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports Sonja Jean Yatlin and her public defender appeared Wednesday before District Court Judge Paul Lyle to seek the hearing.

Prosecutors say Yatlin drove a car last May that struck 92-year-old Yolanda "Rocky" Rockar on Sixth Avenue. The elderly woman suffered a broken arm, broken leg, broken ribs and a broken pelvis. She died nine days later.

Leaving the scene of an accident in which someone was injured is a felony. Conviction can mean a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

The change of plea was set for July 5.
