District, Juneau teachers agree to mediation

Published: May 13, 2012

JUNEAU -- The Juneau School District and its teachers will seek mediation to assist in contract talks. The Juneau Empire reported negotiations between the school district and the Juneau Education Association reached an impasse Saturday.

Union President Ben Kriegmont said salaries, changes to work schedule and the length of a proposed contract remain at issue.

He said the union has rejected the district's proposal for a one-half percent salary increase and just a one-year contract.

District officials could not immediately be reached during the weekend.

Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich said in a prepared statement that the gap between proposals has narrowed substantially and district officials remain confident an agreement can be reached.
