Whale drowns after getting hooked on ship's anchor chain

Published: May 17, 2012

KODIAK -- A whale drowned after getting its baleen hooked on the anchor chain of a fishing vessel.

KMXT reports the 60-foot fin whale was feeding April 17 in Uyak Bay, about 60 miles southwest of Kodiak. The whale's baleen got caught on the chain of the 48-foot fishing vessel, and it wasn't able to get loose.

Kate Wynne, a marine mammal specialist with the University of Alaska Marine Advisory Program, says when the whale hit the line, it towed the boat sideways briefly, and the ship took on water for a few seconds.

Wynne says while the whale drowned, it also could have ended poorly for the fishing boat and crew, too.
