FAIRBANKS -- A memorial ceremony Wednesday at Fort Wainwright honored the 21 men killed in action during the Stryker brigade's yearlong deployment in Afghanistan.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says the ceremony was at Monterey Lake Memorial Park, where hundreds gathered to witness the dedication of a granite centerpiece dedicated to the Stryker brigade.

The memorial also features individual markers bearing the name of each fallen soldier.

Maj. Gen. Raymond Palumbo, commander of U.S. Army Alaska, told the crowd he feels honored to have served with the men who died in action during the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division's deployment.
