East sweeps South in softball

East celebrated Senior Night with a pair of Cook Inlet Conference victories over South at Wendler Middle School on Thursday, taking the first game 14-0 and the second 13-5.

Sydney Smith pitched for wins in both games, with Erika Meyerson, Carie Sauerbrey and Morgan Hill putting a charge in the T-birds' offense. Meyerson went a combined 4 for 6 and scored six times, Sauerbrey was a combined 5 for 6 with five RBIs and Hill went 5 for 7 with a triple.

East (18-0 overall, 7-0 CIC) will enter next week's CIC tournament as the top seed.

West sweeps Chugiak

Behind two power-pitching performances, West picked up two victories over Chugiak at Albrecht Fields on Thursday, winning the first 6-2 and taking the second 9-3.

West pitcher Pauline Tufi struck out 12 in the first game, earning a complete-game victory. Nikki Olsen was West's big hitter, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Chugiak's Mollie Matthis was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Olsen pitched the second game for West and picked up where Tufi left off. She struck out 12 and allowed four hits. Nanea Tali (3 for 4) and Julia Merritt (2 for 4), both freshmen, propelled the West offense.

West improved to 17-5 overall and 7-1 in CIC play, earning the Eagles the second seed in next week's CIC tournament.
