South and Service each clinched spots in the state baseball tournament by virtue of wins Friday in the Cook Inlet Conference tournament. South downed Chugiak 11-6 at Chad Bax Field, and Service beat Dimond 3-2 at Mulcahy Stadium.
South, the reigning state champion, scored 11 unanswered runs in its win, coming back from a 6-0 deficit. Logan Allred led South batters, going 3 for 3 with an RBI triple, and Josh Crapps struck out 15 in the win. Chase Wilson led Chugiak with two hits and four RBIs.
Garrett Brown scored the winning run for Service, coming home on a sixth-inning base hit from Trace Woodruff
Woodruff drove in two runs for the Cougars and catcher Ryan Bailey (2 for 3) drove in the other, helping Service (8-0) clinch a spot in the state tournament for the first time since the Cougars won a state title in 2001.
Mike Shuler picked up a win in relief and Zach Ferntheil survived a bases-loaded jam in the top of the seventh to earn a save.
Dimond pitcher Sagan Osborne scattered six hits in six innings and drove in a run.
