Service claims the CIC baseball crown

Published: May 19, 2012

By virtue of its 5-1 win over Chugiak and Dimond's 7-5 win over South at Mulcahy Stadium, undefeated Service clinched the Cook Inlet Conference baseball title Saturday.

The CIC title is decided by overall record, so South (7-2) needed a win against Dimond and a win over Service (9-0) on Monday to force a tie-breaking championship game with the Cougars on Tuesday.

Matt Ilalio helped make sure Service wouldn't need to play in a tie-breaker, going 3 for 4 with a double and a run in Saturday's win.

Jake Ridley added an RBI triple for Service and Johnny Meszaros went 1 for 2 with two runs. Zach Ferntheil struck out nine over five innings to earn the win.

Justin Schneider went 2 for 4 for Chugiak and Kai Fugere drove in the Mustangs' only run.

The Dimond boys came from behind three times in their win over South.

South held leads at 3-0, 4-3 and 5-4, but the Lynx persevered with the help of two doubles and two RBIs from Jordan Clevenger. Sagan Osborne added a two-run base hit for the Lynx and Kyle Kornegay smacked a two-run triple. Starting pitcher Grant Remmer picked up the win and Kornegay earned the save by striking out South's last two hitters.

Bartlett 10, Eagle River 1

Bartlett scored nine runs in the top of the third inning Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium, on its way to a 10-1 victory over Eagle River in a CIC tournament consolation baseball game.

Wynter Gross pitched a complete game for the Golden Bears, striking out seven and scattering three hits. He also went 2 for 4, drove in a run and scored twice. Deray Alex added three hits, two runs and two RBIs, and freshman Ryan Dudley went 3 for 4.
