Dimond High's reward for winning the Cook Inlet Conference girls tournament last week: A brutal bracket in this week's state championships.

The Lynx, who last week beat Service 2-0 in the conference semifinals and South 1-0 on penalty kicks in the final, could face those same two teams again in the first two days of the three-day tournament at Dimond Alumni Field and Chugiak's Tom Huffer Sr. Stadium.

Top-seeded Dimond plays eighth-seeded Service in Thursday's opening round of the eight-team tournament. The winner of that match advances to a Friday semifinal match against the winner of Thursday's opener between fourth-seeded Juneau-Douglas and fifth-seeded South.

Dimond and South are coming off an epic conference championship game, which went to penalty kicks after the teams played through 110 minutes of scoreless soccer. That pushed the teams to the pressure and drama of penalty kicks -- the shots from the spot included an exquisite chip shot by South's Madison Jungwirth and the title-winning clincher from Dimond's Bobbye Pendleton.

South and Dimond last season met in the state championship game, with South winning 3-0.

The champions of the four conferences -- Cook Inlet, Northern Lights, Mid Alaska and Southeast -- are automatically awarded the top four seeds.

Specific seeding is established with criteria that includes won-loss-tie record, strength of schedule and conference tournament results, or in the case of a conference that does not hold a tournament, regular-season placing in the conference.

CIC champion Dimond also is the top seed in the boys tournament and opens Thursday with a match against eighth-seeded Homer.

Dimond could run into fifth-seeded South, which it beat 2-1 in the CIC final, in the semifinals. South opens against fourth-seeded Wasilla. The other CIC boys entry, sixth-seeded West, opens against third-seeded West Valley.
