Residents escape but dogs die in Spenard house fire

Published: May 23, 2012

No one was reported injured but two dogs died in a Spenard house fire early Wednesday, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

A caller reported the blaze about 2 a.m. at a single-family house at 1905 W. 47th Ave., said department spokesman Al Tamagni.

"One of the callers was the neighbor, who said the house had heavy smoke and flames," he said.

A dozen fire vehicles rushed to the scene, Tamagni said. The first crews to arrive noted flames damaged roughly 70 percent of the house, he said.

The owner told firefighters everyone inside had escaped, though two dogs remained, Tamagni said.

"Not long after (firefighters) got there, they found the dogs deceased," he said.

Damage to the house was extensive, Tamagni said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
