Bouncing back from a Wednesday loss to West that pierced its undefeated season, the East High softball team beat West twice on Thursday night to win the Cook Inlet Conference tournament title and seize the top seed in next week’s state tournament. The Thunderbirds won 3-0 in the opener at Albrecht Fields to hand West its first setback in the double-elimination tournament and force the if-necessary game the T-birds won 6-4. Sydney Smith pitched a pair of complete games for East. Erika Meyerson homered in the first game and Carrie Sauerbrey doubled.Pauline Tufi, the losing pitcher of a complete-game effort in the opener Thursday and the winning pitcher in West’s 3-1 win Wednesday, homered twice and drove in all four of the Eagles’ runs in Thursday’s second game. But East’s Taria Page doubled twice and drove in two runs, and Meyerson doubled. West had one runner on with two outs in the top of the seventh in the second game. East intentionally walked Tufi, and Nikki Olsen grounded out to end the game. East, West, Chugiak and Service are the CIC’s four teams in next week’s state tournament.
