JUNEAU -- Gov. Sean Parnell has signed a proclamation declaring June to be "Safety Month."
This is to coincide with the National Safety Council's National Safety Month. The council promotes injury prevention and death at work, on the road and in homes and communities.
State Labor Commissioner Dianne Blumer says in a news release that fatalities in Alaska's workplaces more than doubled between 2009 and 2010, going from 17 to 39. She says more than 60 percent of those came on Alaska highways and urged caution during the upcoming travel season.
