KODIAK -- Kodiak's high school baseball team and others scheduled to fly out of the city Wednesday were delayed by a surprise geologic event.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports a rock slide on Pillar Mountain blocked traffic for several hours. The rocks piled up between two city piers on Kodiak's main road south.
The community began having problems at the site in the early 1970s when a quarry was developed. The Alaska Department of Transportation erected barriers to protect the road, but rocks and boulders overflowed from the capture area.
The roadblock prevented the baseball team from making its scheduled flight to Kenai for the Southcentral Conference Championship games.
