Pedestrian struck and killed by van on freeway on-ramp

Anchorage Daily NewsMay 25, 2012

A woman was struck and killed by a passenger van early Friday while walking on a freeway on-ramp between the Glenn Highway and Muldoon Road, Anchorage police said.

It was about 5:30 a.m. when the 1995 Ford van hit the 45-year-old woman. Police have not publicly identified her pending notification of next of kin.

Van driver Robert Kremer had picked up two friends who'd just arrived at the Anchorage airport and was heading to Wasilla. He turned onto the on-ramp and hit the woman, who was in his lane of travel, police spokeswoman Anita Shell said.

"It is unclear whether the woman was standing or attempting to cross the road when she was struck by the right front (passenger side) of the van," Shell said.

Medics rushed to the scene but soon pronounced the woman dead.

Shell said it was unclear if alcohol played a role in the woman's death. Kremer was not cited and was not drinking, police said.

The on-ramp was closed for three hours as officers investigated the circumstances of the crash, police said.
