Suspect being detained after altercation in Spenard

May 29, 2012

A woman's hands were cut and a man beaten in an altercation in Spenard Tuesday night, Anchorage police said.Officers rushed to the area of Spenard Road and Benson Boulevard just before 7 p.m. for a reported stabbing, said Sgt. Tom Oels.

A woman appeared to have suffered cuts to her hands and was standing next to a man witnesses described as the suspect, Oels said. Another man was reportedly hit or punched and at a different location when police arrived, the sergeant said.

Police quickly handcuffed the first man and put him in the back of a patrol car. Oels said it was too soon to say if the man would be arrested.

"We're not going to call it 'in custody.' We're going to call it 'being detained' for now, until we get an idea of what's going on," Oels said. "(The woman) is extremely upset. What she is saying doesn't make a lot of sense."

Oels said alcohol it thought to have been involved.

"I can't tell you if there's copious amounts, but it was enough that I could smell it," Oels said.

Everyone involved appeared to be in their 20s. Police have not released their names. None of the injuries were life-threatening, Oels said.
