Matt Novakovich crushed the course record Saturday at the Government Peak Climb at Hatcher Pass, a grueling uphill race that gains 3,500 feet in its 2.75 miles.

Novakovich made the trip in 46 minutes, 27.5 seconds. That shaved more than 20 seconds off the old record of 46:51, set in 2008 by Sam Hill.

Novakovich beat a quality field that included three recent Mount Marathon winners -- defending champion Eric Strabel (third in 49:05), 2009 champion Matias Saari (fourth in 49:26) and 2008/2010 champion Trond Flagstad (fifth in 49:44).

Also making an impression were Ben and Christy Marvin.

Ben Marvin finished second to Novakovich in 48:53. And Christy Marvin -- the former Christy Virgin, who starred in high school for Glennallen -- won the women's race in 58:35, well ahead of Caitlin Patterson (second in 59:50) and Mara Rabinowitz (third in 59:52).
