Combat Engineers prepare to deploy

About 100 members of the Army's 23rd Engineer Company (Airborne) were recognized at a deployment ceremony on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson on Wednesday, June 6, 2012. The unit of combat engineers, or "sappers", will deploy to Afghanistan for a 9-month tour later this month. Their duties typically include construction and demolition to assist the movement of US forces as well as clearing improvised explosives.
