Viral video of supposed Shell PR disaster is elaborate fake

The Seattle Post Intelligencer, Gothamist and Gizmodo were among websites taken in today by video of a supposed public relations disaster at a Shell event celebrating upcoming offshore drilling in the Arctic. In the video, a model drill rig malfunctions, spewing liquor over an elderly attendee. Shell quickly labeled the video a hoax perpetrated by drilling opponents, and Gawker details how the instigators tried to make the whole thing seem real.
