A Michigan man died when his rental car collided head on with another rental driven by an out-of-state driver Monday night on the Sterling Highway near Soldotna, Alaska State Troopers said.

It was about 8:45 p.m. when an SUV driving south crossed into the northbound lane at Mile 72.5 and smashed into a small car driven by Richard Price, of Gowen, Mich., troopers said. The crash destroyed the 2012 Nissan Versa and killed Price, 52. His wife Diane, 58, was badly injured and flown by helicopter to Soldotna's Central Peninsula Hospital, troopers said.

Joshua Millstein, a 27-year-old resident of Lake Worth, Fla., and the driver of the rented 2011 Chevrolet Equinox that hit the Prices' car, was taken to the same hospital with minor injuries, as was his lone passenger, troopers said.

An investigation into the circumstances of the wreck continues, troopers said.
