Suspected fire shuts down gold mine for 22 hours

Published: June 14, 2012

FAIRBANKS -- Operations at the Pogo Mine north of Delta Junction were interrupted by what may have been a fire.

The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports an underground haul truck driver on Tuesday spotted saw a glow and activated the fire suppression system.

Mine spokeswoman Lorna Shaw says supervisors evacuated 34 workers and the mine was shut down for almost a day.

Shaw says it's not clear whether a fire occurred. After an inspection, the mine reopened Tuesday night.

Shaw says the mine produces about 945 ounces of gold per day and the 22-hour shutdown means lost production that can't be recovered until the end of the mine's life. She says that works out to be $1.5 million in deferred revenue, but that the safety of mine employees is more important.
