JUNEAU -- A fishing boat under tow in Shelikof Strait has sunk.
KMXT reports the Scandia sank early Monday in Uyak Bay, about 50 miles southwest of Kodiak City. The boat was being towed to Kodiak by the Hazel Lorraine when it sank.
Five crew members had been lifted to safety by Coast Guard helicopter Sunday. They had boarded a skiff when the 56-foot Scandia began taking on water and they couldn’t pump it out. They were about 70 miles from Kodiak when the boat began taking on water.
A dog had been left on board the Scandia but was rescued by the Hazel Lorraine crew before the Scandia sank.
There are no reports of pollution from the sinking. The Scandia carried 1,200 gallons of diesel and 80 gallons of lube oil.
