Eagle River man kills self after standoff, police say

Published: June 21, 2012

An Eagle River man killed himself during a several-hour standoff with police Thursday that closed a neighborhood street and saw six homes evacuated, according to an Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman. Police were called about 10:30 a.m. to a home on the 16000 block of Theodore Drive in north Eagle River on a report that a man who lived there was suicidal and had several guns in the house, said APD spokeswoman Anita Shell.

At one point, more than 20 police units, including a SWAT team, were called to the street, in the Powder Ridge subdivision. Police evacuated six nearby homes and closed Vasili Drive, a residential street, to traffic.

After police couldn't make contact with the man for more than four hours they entered the home at around 3 p.m. and found the 42-year-old man dead of a gunshot wound.

All streets in the neighborhood are now open. The man's next of kin have been notified.
