FAIRBANKS -- Fire crews are battling a 2,500-acre wildfire near the village of Allakaket.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner says more than 200 firefighters were at the scene of the fire Friday.
The fire started Wednesday in the local landfill and quickly spread to surrounding wilderness. Fire officials say the fire came within a half mile of homes at the village's new town site at one point, but east winds kept it from coming closer.
The fire has been moving northeast away from the village of about 100 people on the south bank of the Koyukuk River.
According to an Alaska Fire Service report, firefighters made significant progress Thursday on the north flank closest to the village.
Allakaket is 190 miles northwest of Fairbanks.
