ANCHORAGE -- While a wildfire southwest of the Interior town of Anderson likely will grow, cooler weather and cloud cover are giving firefighters a break for now.

The Bear Creek fire on Tuesday 14 miles southwest of Anderson was estimated at 8,200 acres -- a big decrease from the previous day when fire officials estimated its size at about 20,000 acres.

Officials said Tuesday the decrease was due to more accurate mapping of the fire.

More than 300 fire personnel have been assigned to the Bear Creek fire, which was started by lightning on June 23. The fire is only 1 percent contained.

Meanwhile, crews continue to make good progress toward containing a wildfire that began at the dump in Allakaket. On Tuesday, the 2,700-acre fire was about 70 percent contained.
