Naknek woman faces charges in killings of 2 brown bear cubs

Published: June 27, 2012

NAKNEK -- Alaska State Troopers have cited a Naknek woman for not reporting she killed two brown bears in defense of life or property and not properly salvaging the bears.

Katie Copps-Wilson was cited after troopers were told of two dead brown bear cubs in the Naknek River. Troopers first contacted her June 17, and announced the citation Wednesday.

In a Web posting, troopers allege she killed the bears and dumped the bodies in the river without salvaging skulls and hides with claws attached or alerting authorities.

Arraignment was scheduled July 9 in Naknek, which is nearly 300 miles southwest of Anchorage.
