Worth noting
The Peninsula Oilers erupted for four runs in the eighth inning -- part of the rally was courtesy of a bases-loaded throwing error by the Anchorage Bucs -- and racked a 5-0 win Wednesday night at Mulcahy Stadium to stretch their lead atop the Alaska Baseball League.
The Oilers (11-6, 8-4 ABL) moved one game ahead of the Chugiak Chinooks, who split a doubleheader in Fairbanks.
Peninsula loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth, plated two runs on that throwing error and also got a fielder's choice RBI from Riley Heinzer in the inning. Peninsula's Nate Ring homered in the sixth inning.
The Bucs (8-6, 4-4 ABL) dropped one spot to fourth place.
In Palmer, Anchorage Glacier Pilots third baseman Kevin Swick broke a seventh-inning tie with a two-run homer and drove in four runs in a 9-4 victory over the Mat-Su Miners at Hermon Brothers Field.
Tyler Spoon went 4 for 6, scored twice and drove in a run for the Pilots, who used five pitchers. Mat-Su also used five pitchers, and they combined to strike out 14.
The Pilots (5-9, 5-4 ABL) moved into third place in the six-team league and the last-place Miners (5-9, 3-9 ABL) dropped five games behind the Oilers.
In Fairbanks, the Goldpanners and Chinooks split a doubleheader of seven- inning games, with the Chinooks grabbing a 7-2 win in the afternoon opener and the Goldpanners seizing a 9-2 win in the nightcap.
The Chinooks (6-4, 6-4 ABL) won the opener at Growden Park, thanks to a strong performance from starter Matt Marsh, two home runs and six errors, all in the infield, by the Goldpanners.
Marsh scattered six hits and struck out six in six innings, allowing two runs. Drew Shields led off the game with a homer and Chris Matthews ripped a two-run shot in the sixth. Fairbanks' Michael Zeblo launched a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
The Goldpanners (9-5, 3-4 ABL) answered in the nightcap with a six-run third inning that included Matt Nadolski's two-run single and Joey Epperson's RBI single, and was capped by Paul Politi's three-run homer.
