Two Southeast Alaska residents were still missing Thursday, one from her home in Hyder and the other a kayaker from Wrangell who didn't return when expected.

Cathleen Currie, a 60-year-old Hyder resident, hasn't been seen since June 21. Searchers in a helicopter and on the ground were looking for Currie for a second day Thursday, troopers said. Initial search efforts began near Currie's yurt on the Salmon River, but volunteers still haven't found a trace of Currie, a troopers spokeswoman said.

Farther north, an ongoing search for 25-year-old Colin Buness, a kayaker who was supposed to return to his home in Wrangell on June 24, turned up Buness' boat, troopers said Thursday.

"His vessel was found caught on a log jam along with some gear," said troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters. "There is a chance he is self-rescuing."

According to the National Guard, one of their UH-60 Black Hawks and its crew are helping look for Buness, a sergeant in the Guard.

The Ketchikan Volunteer Rescue Squad is working on both searches.
