SOLDOTNA -- Law enforcement chased off a brown bear after getting a report that it had taken down a moose calf in a parking lot in Soldotna.

The Peninsula Clarion says that Soldotna police and Alaska Wildlife Troopers got a report of a bear killing a moose near Watt's Homestead on Tuesday. When they responded, they found a large bear in the woods that had fled the area but no moose carcass.

As of June 21, Peninsula residents had shot and killed three adult brown bears in defense of life and property.
