KODIAK -- Swayed by the pleas from Girl Scouts and baseball players, the Kodiak Island Borough Assembly reduced its planned contribution to the borough's homeless shelter to restore funding to the Kodiak Girl Scouts and Kodiak Little League.
The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports that the Assembly voted unanimously to reinstate $4,500 in funding for Little League and $1,000 for Girl Scouts, then voted 6-1 to give a total of $362,495 to 20 organizations.
In a work session last week, the Assembly reached consensus on a proposal that would raise the borough's contribution to the Brother Francis Shelter from $50,000 to $60,000.
Now the shelter will get $54,500.
Last year, the shelter was forced to dip into its reserves to meet demand for its homeless prevention program.
