The Anchorage Assembly plans to discuss an ordinance to increase the distance from the entrance of a public building at which a smoker can light up.At Tuesday night's meeting, Assemblyman Dick Traini proposed expanding the buffer zone in the city's Secondhand Smoke Control Ordinance from 20 to 50 feet to keep tobacco smoke from coming in doors, windows or ventilation systems. The ordinance would apply to any city- or school district-owned or leased buildings, Traini said.

He said he had gotten 10 or 12 complaints from Anchorage residents about smokers at the doors of city buildings, like City Hall.

The proposal will be up for public hearing at the Assembly's Aug. 7 meeting.
